Spam email tells Oakland County woman she won $3 million from Mega Millions

Laura Spears of Oakland County won $3 million for matching all five white balls in the Dec. 31 Mega Millions drawing.

The 55-year-old Oakland County woman received an email from the Michigan Lottery, saying she won $3 million from the Dec. 31 Mega Millions drawing. But it went into her spam folder and she didn’t see it until days later.
Spears matched the five white balls – 02-05-30-46-61 – for a $1 million prize with the ticket purchased online from the Michigan Lottery website. The Megaplier tripled her prize to $3 million.
Spears was looking for a missing email from someone a few days after the Dec. 31 drawing and checked her spam folder.
“That’s when I saw an email from the Lottery saying I had won a prize,” she said. “I couldn’t believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my Lottery account to confirm the message in the email. It’s all still so shocking to me that I really won $3 million.”
Spears plans to plans to share some of her winnings with family and retire earlier than planned. And she may not be done playing the lottery.
“I definitely added the Michigan Lottery to my safe senders list just in case I ever get lucky enough to receive another email about a huge prize,” Spears said.
The Mega Millions jackpot is currently up to $376 million. Drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday evening with tickets costings $2 and an additional $1 for the Megaplier.
